Designed by Leon Lempert Jr. and opened December 10, 1928, the Capitol was Rome's first theater to play sound movies, premiering "Lilac Time" with its impressive seven-rank Möller organ. Redecorated in modernistic Art Deco style in 1939—preserved to this day—the theater hosts SummerStage musicals, silent films with live organ accompaniment, and the annual Capitolfest classic film festival attracting patrons from around the world.
